The inspiration for "Our Beijing" came from a casual evening walk along the Liangma River. Boats drifted by, while cyclists, pedestrians, and people resting by the water formed a lively yet peaceful scene. With skyscrapers in the distance and everyday life up close, I realized that what makes Beijing truly captivating isn't some grand historical narrative, but its gentle way of gathering countless wandering souls under the same canopy of lights.
"Where old and new baggage meet with grace" is the core concept of the song. The "baggage" I write about represents both the newcomers who flock to the city and the centuries of history and memories Beijing holds. From the ancient stone gates and grey walls of the old city to the modern skyscrapers and riverside walkways of the new, these elements blend together seamlessly. There's no clash, only a harmonious coexistence—that's the unique spirit of Beijing to me.
In the lyrics, I deliberately avoided empty slogans and grand vocabulary, focusing instead on tangible cityscapes: the rippling canal, the Liangma riverbank, the hills of Tangu, and the stone gateways—all vivid textures of Beijing. But the line "one light is warm, saved just for me" is what I cherish most. The vast cityscapes painted throughout the song ultimately give way to a tiny, personal warmth, where both lifelong locals and wandering dreamers can find a sense of belonging in the everyday hustle.
I hope this song speaks not only to Beijing, but to every city, and to every ordinary person who has found peace within the hustle of life. May the lights never fade, and may the warmth always endure. The story of this city and its people continues to move forward, gently.
